The Los Osos Elfin Forest is located on the south-eastern side of Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County. It is a nature preserve with exceptionally good access and outstanding views. It has a boardwalk that is, except for one short section, wheel chair accessible.

 

Giant Chess Board
One of our favorite places to visit, this coastal town has a giant chess board in a park on the Embarcadero. You can rent it for a small fee or play hop scotch on it for free!

 

Hearst Castle
Hearst Castle is a palatial estate on the central California coast and a National Historic Landmark. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst from 1919 until 1947. In 1957 the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California. Since that time it has been maintained as state historic park where the estate and its considerable collection of art and antiques are open for public tours.

 

Montana De Oro State Park
This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park's trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner's Cove, across from the campground.

 

Morro Bay Aquarium & Marine Rehabilitation
The Morro Bay Aquarium was built in 1960 and is family-owned by Dean and Bertha Tyler. The Morro Bay Aquarium became a rehabilitation center for distressed mammals in 1984 and is a non-profit organization. It features three sea lions and a harbor seal that are housed here and were brought in because of their injuries or abandonment. Feeding the sea lions is fun for both children and adults.

 

Museum of Natural History
Just west of California's scenic Highway 1, midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Morro Bay State Park Museum of Natural History sits on a hill overlooking the Morro Bay Estuary. In addition to panoramic views of the coastline, the view from the museum includes world-famous Morro Rock.

 

Morro Rock
Morro Rock State Historic Landmark was formed about 23 million years ago from the plugs of long-extinct volcanoes. Member of the "Nine Sisters" of volcanic plugs. Home of nesting Peregrine Falcons. Closed to any climbing or disturbance.Morro Rock was an important navigational aid for mariners for over 300 years as it height of 576 feet made it the most visible in a chain of nine peaks. Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named the rock "El Morro" in 1542. In Spanish "Morro" means crown shaped hill. Morro Rock, sometimes called the "Gibraltor of the Pacific," is the last peak which extends from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.

Aron Hill is a small family vineyard where everything comes from the heart. Located on the west side of the Paso Robles Appellation, these vines are grown in the coveted Templeton Gap. The AronHill Tasting Room is located in the big yellow building on the waterfront at 845 Embarcadero Suite F in Morro Bay. Saunter along the boardwalk in full view of Morro Rock, listen to the seals barking and applauding their approval of the great wines from AronHill, then stop into the tasting room to see what all the noise is about.

Railroad Depot
(South end of Santa Rosa Street) This restored depot brings back memories of the time when railroads were America's lifeline.

Jack House
(536 Marsh Street) Built in the late 1870s and deeded to the city by the Jack family in 1974, this historic Victorian home has been fully restored into a “living museum,” giving visitors a glimpse of life at the turn of the century. San Luis Obispo Art Center
(1010 Broad St.) San Luis Obispo's community art center in Mission Plaza features the works of many of SLO's most talented amateur and professional artists. Admission is free. Open to the public 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

County Historical Museum
(696 Monterey St., next to the Mission) Tells the story of San Luis Obispo's colorful history via changing displays of old photographs and artifacts. Open Wednesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission.

Cuesta College
(5 mi. west of SLO on Highway 1 north) Known statewide for its dedication to lifelong learning, this scenic 150 acre campus, bordered by Hollister Peak and Cerro Romaldo, is open to visitors.

San Luis Obispo's Children's Museum
(1010 Nipomo St.) A museum just for children and others who like to explore and learn. Kids can race to the scene of a fire on the back of a fire engine, watch themselves on television or zip down a dinosaur slide. Admission $4.
